Writers’ Guidelines

We aim to publish work that engages, stimulates, and entertains the thinking reader. We aren’t interested in work that disrespects women, people of color, or others of a non-privileged identity. Since all the editors are feminist, writing with a feminist sensibility is more likely to appeal to us than non-feminist writing, but we don’t require that the work we publish have an explicitly feminist perspective.

We publish writing across a variety of genres: essays, reviews, manifestos, poetry, interviews, cartoons, flash fiction, and combinations thereof.  We would especially like to see creative nonfiction like that written by Eula Biss. We feature the work of one artist per issue.

All submissions must be made electronically, as RTF files or Word documents, to the appropriate editor. (If you are not sure which editor is appropriate, query the Managing Editor.) Submissions should be formatted in standard manuscript style—double-spaced, in Times Romans font, with indented paragraphs. We prefer that you use italics for words meant to be italicized. (Underlining to indicate italics only adds an unnecessary step to the editor’s work.)

Essays

The Features Editor will consider unsolicited submissions of essays that are under 5000 words. For longer pieces, please query the editor before submitting.

Reviews

The Reviews Editor assigns all our reviews. If you are interested in reviewing for the Zone, please contact her about doing so. We are eager to add new reviewers to our ranks.
